FEDOMA was established in 1999.
It is an umbrella body of disability organisations in Malawi.

MISSION STATEMENT

TO ENHANCE THE WELFARE OF ALL PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AND ENABLE THEM TO ASSUME THEIR RIGHTFUL ROLE IN SOCIETY.

 

MAIN OBJECTIVES

  • To support and encourage the formation of persons with disabilities organisations in Malawi and to strengthen the existing ones.
  • To promote and coordinate development efforts and self-help projects among persons with disabilities and their organisations.
  • Co-ordinate the work for equal rights and equalisation of opportunities for persons with disabilities in Malawi society.
  • Promote training of leaders of the organisations and the administrative personnel.
  • To promote, support and complement government policies and programmes directed at persons with disabilities.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information in the field of disability through research, civic education programmes and seminars.
  • Affiliate and cooperate with other national, regional and international organisations that work in disability.

 

Main Functions of Organisation

  • Capacity Building of the Advocacy Skills of FEDOMA Membership Organisations.
  • Raising Awareness on Disability Issues.
  • Carry Out Research On Disability Issues.

 

Services Provided by Organisation

  • It carries out disability awareness building activities to combat negative attitudes towards disability.
  • It provides advice and expertise to government, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders on disability issues.

 

Achievements Of Organisation Since Its Establishment

  • FEDOMA played a pivotal role in the disability policy formulation. It chaired the National Task Force that was formed to solicit input from a cross section of the civil society to be used as a basis for policy formulation.
  • FEDOMA is playing an advisory role both to government and NGO on disability issues.
  • FEDOMA has established networks with other local and international organisations within and outside the country.

 

Future Plans

  • To build a sustainable base by acquiring its own operational base where it can run income-generating activities such as renting out office space.
  • To ensure that all its membership organisations are resourced in order to effectively meet the needs of their members.
  • To maintain a consistent sensitization campaign geared towards building social positive attitude to disability by optimum utilizing the mass media.
