Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) is an umbrella organization for all the Disabled Peoples Organizations (DPOs) in Malawi established to provide a unified voice for all persons with disabilities. The federation is duly registered with Government under the Trustees Incorporation Act as well as under the NGO Board of Malawi; and it is affiliated ot he Council for Non-Government Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA).
The mission of FEDOMA is to enhance the welfare of persons with disabilities and enable them play their rightful role in society.
FEDOMA’s founding objectives include promoting and advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities; advocating for and monitoring the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities as stipulated in the United Nation’s Standard Rules; and coordinating and strengthening the capacity of the affiliated DPOs.
FEDOMA as an umbrella organization is respected and consulted by both the Government and NGOs on issues that relate to disability. Since its inception, FEDOMA has organized and has been involved in various activities towards the realization of its objectives, including among others: community awareness building campaigns, rallies and workshops to sensitize the communities on disability issues; orientation workshops for members of parliament and journalists to sensitize them on disability issues; advocacy for enactment of the Bill on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, eventually enacted in June 2012; among many others.
