The Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi FEDOMA has urged gender technical working groups in Mzimba District to help address rights of persons with disabilities in their localities saying persons with disabilities for so long have not being given space to enjoy their rights as there is no inclusive environment.
The development comes during a workshop training conducted by FEDOMA and UNDP with an aim to impart knowledge to the Gender Technical Working Groups (GTWGs) saying such groups are capable to lobby for inclusion since they are empowered with rights for the marginalized groups.
According to FEDOMA Acting Executive Director, Simon Munde, these GTWGs live with different people including those with disabilities, but it has been a challenge for them to take on board their welfare, possibly due to lack of knowledge; hence, the training.
“We organized the training to equip these people with the knowledge on disability rights and we focused on inclusion and we hope this is an eye opener,” said Munde.
Apart from Mzimba, the FEDOMA-UNDP Spotlight Initiative is also implemented in other 5 districts of Nkhata-Bay, Ntchisi, Dowa, Machinga and Nsanje.
